Cocaine addictions have spread rapidly among the young generation during 1980 to 1990, which has resulted in the mushroom growth of addiction treatment centers in various parts of the world. Cocaine is a very powerful addictive stimulant and affects brain directly by its consumption. Cocaine addictions are not something new development of this century, it has been known to people as abused substance for more than 100 years and its source was known for thousand years.
Cocaine was initially extracted from coca plants, which was grown mostly in Peru and Bolivia. It has been synthesized into a drug and was used for treatment of various illnesses during early part of last century. Today Cocaine is used as local anesthetic chemical by doctors during various surgical treatments. However, various abuse of this drug for physical pleasure has resulted into Cocaine addictions in recent times. People who are victim of Cocaine addictions usually procure this drug either from the street or from illegal drug supplier. They are available in the form of crystalline powder, which is diluted by talcum powder, sugar or some locally available anesthetic chemicals. Drug addicts consume them either by nose or by mixing it with tobacco and smoke them. Some people inject Cocaine by needle, which has a risk of HIV infection – which ultimately leads to AIDS.
The effect of Cocaine appears immediately after the consumption of a single dose and then disappears within few minutes or hours depending upon the potency of the drug consumed. When it is taken in small quantity the user feel jubilant, energetic, talkative, and become mentally alert. Temporarily the appetite and urge to sleep is also reduced. During the initial period of Cocaine addictions people find that the drug helps them to perform simple physical and intellectual tasks more quickly, while others can experience the opposite effect. But when the Cocaine addictions are continued further they feel restlessness, irritability and anxiety. If they do not get Cocaine for little longer period they feel depressed and there is urge to take more. Sometime they become desperate and it becomes difficult to control their consumption. During this period of Cocaine addiction, people loses touch with reality and experiences hallucinations.
There are various treatments available for Cocaine addictions now-a-days. However, it is very difficult to handle this problem without the help of any experienced professionals and the support of family members and friends. Normal physicians can diagnose Cocaine addictions, but refer the patients to a psychiatrist, psychologist, clinical social worker, or other professionals specializing in addictions. Some Cocaine addicts are more prone to relapse and they are most difficult to be treated. This is not a problem that passes with time, as Cocaine abuse is a matter of life and death and should be taken very seriously.
