It has been said that everything rises or falls on leadership. Effective leadership skills are essential in order to be successful in any endeavor. Many people believe that leadership involves position. By giving someone a position of leadership...they become a leader. However I would say that leadership is influence not position. Effective leadership skills help leaders indentify with the people they are leading and accomplish their goals...creating a win-win environment.

First, effective leadership skills involves knowing the people you are leading. People want to be known. People don't want to be a "number" or just another employee. They want to be know by their name. As a leader one of the best things you can do is memorize the names of all those that work for you. I recognize that if you operate a major company that could be impossible. However, you might learn the names of all the supervisors and then encourage them to do the same with those "under them." It trickles down..from the top to the bottom. Take interest in your employees.

Second, effective leadership skills involves expressing appreciation for a job well done. Recognition is a great motivator. When you take the time to notice those who have been working hard...it encourages them to work harder. It is one of the greatest motivator. It sends them the message that they are valuable and appreciated. Whether it is their name on a bulletin board, in a newsletter, or being mentioned in front of the "team"...recognition goes a long way.

Third, effective leadership skills involves listening to your employees. It is easy to get 'out of touch' because as the leader you have the job to cast the vision and move things forward. Your employees however are 'on the front lines' and can provide you important information regarding employee morale, workplace issues, etc. Determine a specifc time and way to get feedback from your employees. It not only makes them feel a part of the team, it can also help you become a more effective leader.

Fourth, effective leadership skills involves a servant's attitude. As the leader I must be willing to get in there and work with my employees. I must let them see that I am willing to 'roll up my sleeves" and work alongside of them. Effective leadership skills include my willigness to serve my employees. They need to see that I don't consider myself "to good" to do what they do. This helps me to identify with them.

When effective leadership is implemented all parties involved achieve success.
