When it comes to being an effective leader a number of things are important. However, gaining the respect of others is one of the most important principles necessary to be successful. If you don't have the respect of others you are at best an ineffective leader. In order to gain the respect of others you must recognize the following four things.
First, gaining the respect of others is earned through integrity. Surveys consistently show that the one quality people look for in a leader is integrity. Someone that they can trust. Someone once said, "Men of genius are admired, men of wealth are envied, men of power are feared, but men of character are trusted.' People respect others that are trustworthy, loyal and sincere. Integrity means that I will treat people fair, run my business in an honest way and live my life in an honorable way.
Second, gaining the respect of others is earned through dependability. people respect someone that will "do what they say." This is also true with our kids. it is easy to make off the cuff promises to them. "Yes, we will go swimming tomorrow or...sure we will go to the park sometime." Then later when I am to tired to deliver and what was not big deal to me becomes a real big deal to them. It hurts them...and I didn't even realize it. It is beter to run the risk of being indecisive than to promise and not fulfill. In the workplace employers respect and appreciate employees that show up on time, work hard, do what they say and are dependable in every apsect of their job.
Third, gaining the respect of others is earned through generosity. The truth is that no one is ever honored by what they received. They are honored for what they have given. People admire and respect others that look outisde of themselves and are willing to help others in need. Someone once said, "You make a living by what you get, you make a life by what you give."
Fourth, gaining the respect of others is earned through living your life by priority. Effective, respected leaders have goals. Goals that are honorable and worthy of their time and energy. Goals that are not just self serving but also benefit other people. One of the best investments of our time and energy is in people. Taking time to value others and build relationships will earn the respect of others.
