The Bible refers to a person with disability as "the little one" or "the least of my brethren". Christ gave us this commandment to love one another. And how do you care for your disabled will measure how you followed that commandment. I recently learned from somebody - and I know that there's some truth to this - that there are some governments in other countries who allow pregnant women to abort their unborn babies once they learn that the unborn child will be a disabled when "it" is already born. They are anticipating that "it" will become a burden. Such is modern medicine (if you call it medicine). Cleaning the earth of a person with disability.
What does this tell us? It shows that the world is departing from the grace of God. We are discarding humans - complete with body and soul - just because they have some certain impairment. This is an abomination in the eyes of the Lord. It is plain and simple taking the life of another, so precious in the eyes of God. A person with disability is a full (whole) human being, with a soul destined to be in company with God in eternity. Just like you.
And it is for this reason that God sent His own Son to console the downtrodden, the despised, and the little ones. He loves everyone, all of us, with disability or not. A person with disability is precious in the eyes of God.
While there are people who prefer economic advancement by discarding human lives, there are also those - and a lot of t hem - who value human life, and who accept a person with disability wholeheartedly in their lives. A child born, no matter what his impairment is must be welcome by his family and the world. This is what the Lord wants of us.
The bible focuses on the real value and worth on a person with disability. Jesus Christ refers to the reign of God when he says "the blind see, the lame walk and the dead brought back to life." With this, God is glorified and mankind is benefited from it. We have to look up to our a person with disability and see that we don't hurt them, much less offend them. They are as precious as anybody else.
How can you differentiate a normal person from a person with disability? Nothing, except that he or she walks differently, acts or speaks not the way you speak or do. But in the real sense - his composition of body and soul is the same as any human being. Man looks at the ouward appearance, God looks at the heart. The Bible says we are all equal in the eyes of God. But to man, that is not possible. He sees things differently. He sees a person with disability as some obscure being, not fit to be with the rest of humanity.
Stigma traumatizes a person with disability. Why does man rejoice (laugh) over the misfortune of others? Or do you have to call this misfortune? For that is what people, in general, think of this. There is the evil thought in man when he sees a person with disability: somebody who is "freak", he thinks. He can not progress, he can not be as equal as you are.
I experienced it. I was a normal person before until I met that fatal accident that entirely changed my life. God humbled me, and He made me a "normal person again." Had I not become a person with disability, I would not have indulged in things that would truly make me a real human being. God indeed makes us happy over things we think are superficial and unworthy of our concern. Disability is a grace from God, not a curse.
A person with disability deserves to be loved, and has the right to be cared for by his family and society. He can reciprocate your love, be as productive as anybody else. If you have someone at home who has this trait - I say trait, it's not something to be abhorred - please love him or her. He's a gift. With that somebody in your home, you can have extra grace from up above.
There have been countless men and women in the past - people with disability - who have become great, despite their disabilities. They were able to withstand society's apathy and indifference. Other societies have been able to improve considerably due to constant prodding by well-minded individuals. They have programs and activities to improve their special children whom they truly love and care, and give most of their time and efforts.
To be worthy of the love of God, we have to look for our persons with disability. We have to change our attitude towards them, give them their rights and priveleges under our laws, and motivate them to be well-meaning individuals worthy of dignity and respect. Equality is the keyword. Look at their capabilities and potentials, instead of looking at their weaknesses and incapacity.
A person with disability can move mountains, so to speak. A number of them have displayed skill and talents, peculiar of any normal person. God has implanted in him/her some extra talents, to replace the lack of another.
